Old Sagamore Kitchen Remodel: Take 2

Back in 1994, we were hired by a homeowner in Mission Hills to remodel their Old Sagamore kitchen. Then, 21 years later in a fun twist of fate, we were called back by the new homeowners for round two! Here was Scovell Wolfe’s first remodel of the kitchen in all its 90′s glory: And here it is now! Pretty phenomenal, huh? From dark and heavy, to bright and airy. At first glance, the general layout of the kitchen remained the same, but take a closer look - hardly anything is the same! From the shape of the island dramatically changing, to swapping the location of the range and refrigerator, and ever so slightly adjusting the passage location from the kitchen to the mudroom (to name [...]

High Drive: The Kitchen

I thought I’d pop in and share our plans for the kitchen. It’s funny how I absolutely live for designing homes, but when it comes to my own, I’m paralyzed! You’d think that working here at Scovell Wolfe, I’d know just the kind of client I’d want to be and not cause any problems for the project manager. Instead, I’m fickle, unorganized, and indecisive! In other words, I’m lovely to work with But with all my might, I’ve sure tried to hone in on some selections lately. I’ve put together a mood board to try and steer my wandering eyes back to the plan.   COUNTERTOPS: Still a bit indecisive here. Shocking, I know. I’m torn between Maccabeus Quartzite which I’m [...]

Lovely Grills for Delicious Grilled Food.

I asked my husband what I ought to blog about this week. He quickly affirmed the male stereotype. “GRILLS!” he exclaimed! Write about grills! Spring is in the air. The weather is looking up. Doors and windows are opening up. And everyone is moving outdoors for dinner. Because everybody loves to grill, right? Wrong! I am not a griller. However if given the right arrangement, by golly, you might just find me out there 7 nights a week. So here we go, per my husband’s request, a compilation of grills I could get down with. And grilled food I could get down with, too… What do you think? Did an outdoor kitchen just get bumped to the top of your remodeling wish list? [...]

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

YOU HAVE EXACTLY TEN DAYS TO GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER BEFORE MOTHER’S DAY SNEAKS UP ON YOU….AGAIN! And if you do it TODAY, you still have time to personalize a gift for your mama. Personalization? Whatsoever could I be talking about? Well I’ll tell ya. It means it wasn’t last minute. It means you didn’t forget until 4 minutes before your plans to meet her for brunch on Sunday. It means you didn’t race to Quik Trip in search of flowers, cards, something! anything! on your way to brunch because you forgot again! No, giving a personalized gift means you thought ahead! Way ahead! Ten days ahead! That’s an enormous feat for most of us. So do it while there’s still [...]

Get The Look: 2015 Tour Home

I knew by the time that the fourth gal left and then dragged her husband back to see our “NARI Remodeled Homes Tour” featured project this weekend, that this house was the perfect choice for us to show off! Another tour guest came back THREE times in the same afternoon! And countless others lingered for the better part of an hour memorizing every detail of the impeccably decorated and designed home! There was nothing in the house left untouched by Scovell Wolfe. From basement to screened-in porch to kitchen to attic conversion…You get the idea! It was a WHOLE house remodel in every sense of the term. (If you didn’t make it to the tour, you can see all of the [...]

The Bistro Barstool: Steals and Deals

It was fun a few weeks ago looking through popular websites and finding nearly identical light fixtures with NOT identical price tags. I thought I’d give it another go, but this time I stuck with the same product. Or different takes on the same idea, rather. Voila the classic Parisian bistro stool from mainstream stores. (And, by the way, if Serena and Lily hasn’t made it’s way onto your go-to list of home stores yet, make that happen right away! Their catalogue is beyond. Clean and classic. Youthful and timeless. I strongly love that store. ) Anyway…   $$$$ – This first barstool is from Williams Sonoma Home. $$$ – From Serena and Lily. Again, this is totally my jam these [...]

Red Carpet to Living Room: Oscars 2015

There is no denying that fashion influences home design, and, similarly, home design influences the runway. Do you ever think, oh my gosh, I love that Oscar gown so much I wish I could lay my head on it like a pillow and drift off to sleep? …No? You don’t? That’s odd. Well if you did, you’d be in luck! Just look at Sunday night’s Oscars…the gowns were fraught with throw pillow undertones. Don’t believe me? Take a look. What do you think? Does it make you want to get crafty and applique a pink felt rose onto your pillow? Or pull out some gold tassels? Hopefully not. I never said that gorgeous gowns always translate into gorgeous pillows. Nonetheless, you can’t deny that there’s [...]

Lighting Steals and Deals

I happened upon an advertisement for a brass sconce this morning with a big fat price tag, and my first thought was, haven’t I seen that before?? But for like half the price? Being in this business, we’re often sifting through lighting selections that our clients have chosen and we see everything from dirt cheap deals of the century to high dollar, high quality investments. I think I can speak for everyone in the office when I say that there is most definitely a difference between the splurge and the save and it’s more than the price tag. It has a lot to do with the materials used. Whether you like it or not, you very often get what you pay for. [...]

Light Up the Night in Honor of Mardi Gras

It’s Mardi Gras, my friends, so I thought we’d do a Big Easy themed blog this morning… Back in October my husband and I took a quick trip down to New Orleans to visit the friends we’d left behind when we moved back to Kansas City in 2011. We had first made our way to New Orleans chasing jazz as my husband John is a professional pianist. But it wasn’t too long after getting there that I wanted to stay based solely on the architecture and home design. Whatever your feelings of New Orleans are – and people have many! – you can’t deny that the architecture is fantastically unique and fantastically inspiring. It’s one of those few cities with its own [...]

6 Things We Love at Kansas City’s Ikea

So I think it’s time already. I mean Ikea has officially been open for months now. And anyone who wants to has had the chance to go visit the store. Which begs the question – what did you think? Did it live up to the hype? Or was it a major bomb? In years past my husband and I have popped into the occasional Ikea while in other states and I’ve sort of refined my list of those things which I will purchase there and those that I avoid like the plague. So when the KC store opened up, I was first in line to snag my go-to’s and speed past all the Ikea newbies in line for meatballs. Here are [...]
