Mother’s Day Gift Guide

YOU HAVE EXACTLY TEN DAYS TO GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER BEFORE MOTHER’S DAY SNEAKS UP ON YOU….AGAIN! And if you do it TODAY, you still have time to personalize a gift for your mama. Personalization? Whatsoever could I be talking about? Well I’ll tell ya. It means it wasn’t last minute. It means you didn’t forget until 4 minutes before your plans to meet her for brunch on Sunday. It means you didn’t race to Quik Trip in search of flowers, cards, something! anything! on your way to brunch because you forgot again! No, giving a personalized gift means you thought ahead! Way ahead! Ten days ahead! That’s an enormous feat for most of us. So do it while there’s still [...]

Get The Look: 2015 Tour Home

I knew by the time that the fourth gal left and then dragged her husband back to see our “NARI Remodeled Homes Tour” featured project this weekend, that this house was the perfect choice for us to show off! Another tour guest came back THREE times in the same afternoon! And countless others lingered for the better part of an hour memorizing every detail of the impeccably decorated and designed home! There was nothing in the house left untouched by Scovell Wolfe. From basement to screened-in porch to kitchen to attic conversion…You get the idea! It was a WHOLE house remodel in every sense of the term. (If you didn’t make it to the tour, you can see all of the [...]

Our House on the 2015 Remodeled Homes Tour

I sure hope that you’re reading this after having seen this incredible house in person! If not, there’s still tomorrow – Sunday – from 11-4! We had a huge turn out of people today for the NARI Remodeled Homes Tour. They all went crazy over these homeowners’ impeccable taste and classic style. (To get the look of this house, click here for a post on where to find similar light fixtures, furniture, etc!) And of course the cameras were a’ clickin! But, out of respect for the homeowners, we asked that people pocket their cameras and come to our website and snatch the professional pics instead! So here’s the promised virtual tour. But first, a brief little background on the house. This [...]

A Little Florida Vacation Before and After

The first week of March, while Kansas City was getting pummeled with snow, I got to take a little family trip down to my grandparents’ Florida condo. And while the majority of the vacation’s weather was glorious, there were a couple days in there that were not so glorious. So what’s a girl to do? Why, redecorate, of course. My dear, sweet aunts had gone for a “Nantucket” vibe about 15 years ago. Read: chambray comforters, sky blue walls and floral sheets. Hello! So with a little paint (Ok, a lot of paint. The first color bombed and we had to go back for round 2) and a little shopping (Errr, a lot of shopping…two beds means double the sheets, pillows, and blankets…) we [...]

The Bistro Barstool: Steals and Deals

It was fun a few weeks ago looking through popular websites and finding nearly identical light fixtures with NOT identical price tags. I thought I’d give it another go, but this time I stuck with the same product. Or different takes on the same idea, rather. Voila the classic Parisian bistro stool from mainstream stores. (And, by the way, if Serena and Lily hasn’t made it’s way onto your go-to list of home stores yet, make that happen right away! Their catalogue is beyond. Clean and classic. Youthful and timeless. I strongly love that store. ) Anyway…   $$$$ – This first barstool is from Williams Sonoma Home. $$$ – From Serena and Lily. Again, this is totally my jam these [...]

Red Carpet to Living Room: Oscars 2015

There is no denying that fashion influences home design, and, similarly, home design influences the runway. Do you ever think, oh my gosh, I love that Oscar gown so much I wish I could lay my head on it like a pillow and drift off to sleep? …No? You don’t? That’s odd. Well if you did, you’d be in luck! Just look at Sunday night’s Oscars…the gowns were fraught with throw pillow undertones. Don’t believe me? Take a look. What do you think? Does it make you want to get crafty and applique a pink felt rose onto your pillow? Or pull out some gold tassels? Hopefully not. I never said that gorgeous gowns always translate into gorgeous pillows. Nonetheless, you can’t deny that there’s [...]

Whole House: Best of Show!

Not sure if you saw on Facebook a few weeks back, but Jim and I went up to Baltimore to take part in a Remodeler’s Advantage conference. It’s a really exciting new membership for us where we sharpen our skills, get challenged on our way of thinking and doing, and ultimately join in community with remodelers across the nation to better our companies and our staff. It was quite a whirlwind and happened to land on the week of the never-ended-up-happening, storm-of-the-century in Manhattan at the end of January. So we almost thought we may not make it, and many remodelers out of New England with connections through New York didn’t. And then I think they got a couple inches [...]

Lighting Steals and Deals

I happened upon an advertisement for a brass sconce this morning with a big fat price tag, and my first thought was, haven’t I seen that before?? But for like half the price? Being in this business, we’re often sifting through lighting selections that our clients have chosen and we see everything from dirt cheap deals of the century to high dollar, high quality investments. I think I can speak for everyone in the office when I say that there is most definitely a difference between the splurge and the save and it’s more than the price tag. It has a lot to do with the materials used. Whether you like it or not, you very often get what you pay for. [...]

Light Up the Night in Honor of Mardi Gras

It’s Mardi Gras, my friends, so I thought we’d do a Big Easy themed blog this morning… Back in October my husband and I took a quick trip down to New Orleans to visit the friends we’d left behind when we moved back to Kansas City in 2011. We had first made our way to New Orleans chasing jazz as my husband John is a professional pianist. But it wasn’t too long after getting there that I wanted to stay based solely on the architecture and home design. Whatever your feelings of New Orleans are – and people have many! – you can’t deny that the architecture is fantastically unique and fantastically inspiring. It’s one of those few cities with its own [...]

It’s All in the Details

Sometimes some of the most rewarding remodeling projects are not the knock down, drag out, tear your house apart and put it back together again in a totally different way projects. Sometimes it’s simply a homeowner with an eye to refine a part of their house that looks just fine as it is, but could look a whole heck of a lot better! That’s exactly what happened in this Mission Hills home earlier this winter. An otherwise beautiful family room, one stairstep down from the kitchen and living room…yet there was just something about the room being sunken-in that made the windows feel a little squat. The decision to swap them out for new windows and french doors – this time with TRANSOMS – [...]
