John Wolfe
Vice President
Founding Partner
John is the co-founder with Jim Scovell of Scovell Wolfe & Associates, Inc. and serves the company in the role of Chief Financial Officer as well as Chief of Operations. John is proud to have had Jim Scovell as a business partner since 1989 when the two met.
John's primary role at Scovell Wolfe is managing the financial end for both the income and expense sides of the business. In addition to the finances, John also handles the operations side of Scovell Wolfe. Whether it's a human resource issue, employee benefits, insurance or advertising, John and his talented office manager, Lorie Holt are working together to get all the answers to the right people and/or working on solutions to the problems at hand. In addition to these roles, John also stays involved in the actual production of the projects and works closely with management to stay apprised of what is happening on each and every one of the jobs.
When a client gets an invoice from Scovell Wolfe, one of the things that John really prides himself on is a well thought out system of checks and balances. This system is in place so that the customer can feel completely comfortable that the facts and figures involved are correct. He realizes that the enjoyable part of remodeling for the client is seeing the physical metamorphosis of their home take place and the not so enjoyable part is paying the bill. To that end, John makes sure that the invoices are clear and accurate in an attempt to help ease the pain (a little!).
John graduated in 1984 with a Business degree from the University of Kansas. John took a job after College with the real estate appraisal firm of Shaner Appraisals and at the same time began his remodeling career. With a full time job doing residential real estate appraisals, John realized that it made sense in his case to combine home ownership with a real estate investment vehicle via the process of "speculative remodeling". John worked nights and weekends rehabbing houses while living in them from 1984 through 1989. He would design the changes and then did most of the physical work himself - but also relied on subcontractors for some of the technical work. When completed with each home, he would live in them for a short period of time and then resell them for a profit. John inherited his talent and learned much of what he knew about working on homes from his Dad, Joe Wolfe.
In 1989 after completing about a half dozen successful projects in the Leawood and Fairway areas of K.C., John met Jim Scovell and they then joined forces in the same "speculative remodeling" business - but took it to a little higher level. They would still design the projects, but would subcontract out all of the physical work and simply manage and choreograph the projects. They started working in areas of town such as the Ward Parkway Corridor and Mission Hills that provided a little more upside in terms of margin upon resale. The team combined their efforts on the speculative remodels through 1993 and completed an impressive portfolio of projects that they were extremely proud of.
Starting in late 1993, the two began accepting requests for remodeling work on the homes of friends and acquaintances. Some of these requests came to fruition and became the first remodeling projects that were to be performed by what is now known formally as Scovell Wolfe & Associates, Inc.. Scovell Wolfe incorporated in 1994 and went on that year to perform over $1M in remodeling sales. The company has steadily grown since that time to a point where they now have over 20 full time employees and numerous trade contractor alliances which, when combined, they feel represent the finest craftsmen in the Kansas City Area.
While building Scovell Wolfe & Associates, John continued to perform real estate appraisals until June of 2000 at which time the company had grown to the point where John needed to devote 100% of his time to the business. Scovell Wolfe & Associates has won a Gold level award from a local Kansas City homes magazine for each of the last three years. John is extremely proud of what he and Jim have built over the last 17 years together and loves the reward of seeing their clients enjoy time with their families in the "Homes" Scovell Wolfe & Associates has helped create.
John has been a resident of Mission Hills, KS since 1998 and has been married to his wife Cati since 2002. John has a seven year old step daughter and a two year old daughter. These three girls are the apple of John's eye and together with the rest of his family and his church are the "Heart" of his life. John is passionate about his Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team and follows them as much as he is able. He also loves anything that has to do with Colorado and spending time outdoors including hiking, camping, back country exploring, and tries to get to get out "in the woods" whenever possible.
